Kriens presents itself as a city, with a city council and a parliament. With 30,685 residents (permanent resident population 2025) it is the third-largest municipality in the canton after Lucerne and Emmen (LUSTAT). The municipality comprises the districts of Kriens (postcode 6010) and Obernau (6012, including Hergiswald); Eigenthal belongs to the municipality of Schwarzenberg (6013). Together with Horw and the city of Lucerne, Kriens forms the LuzernSüd development area, on Kriens soil with the Mattenhof, Schweighof and Grabenhof sites. On 1 June 2026, 64 dwellings in Kriens were vacant (0.41 %), 11 of them for sale; from 2018 to 2024, 1,801 new dwellings were built.
